Unraveling a Mystery

Journal Entry: Tue May 19, 2009, 10:14 PM

I have to confess that I often wonder about my friends at dA. You know, what kind of people they are in real life? While there are quite a few of you that I have gotten to know pretty well, there is one friend that I admire a great deal, but he has remained such a mystery to me. He is a man of very few words with these incredible images that I adore. I find his techniques exciting and colorful and his photo manipulations nearly perfect by any standards. So, how does he do it? To me he appears to have mastered Photoshop in a way that only those who developed Photoshop possibly could. I have wondered about this so many times.

So, I set out to find out more about my very talented friend Andrey and now I do not feel that he is quite so much of a mystery anymore. Yet, I still feel that there is so much more to know. While he was apologizing for his English and asking me to correct his translations I could only marvel at how little I really needed to do either. At the same time I also wondered if understanding that it might have taken a great deal of his time to provide all of the information that he did in such an easily understandable way, I might also understand more about why he is a man of so few words. Perhaps if I knew his native tongue, I could know all that I wanted. Only Andrey can confirm any of this, but I do still feel that I know him a little better as a result of my little "interview". I hope you will feel that way too.

Thank you Andrey for indulging me and allowing me to do this in depth feature.

He came to deviantART on May 20th 2007 after finding this site by chance. He decided he liked it here and took up the invitation to display the results of his own creative forces. Quite successfully too, as he has become very well known here with over 120,000 page views and close to 2000 watchers. I sure can't give him any more exposure than he already has access to on his own, but I can wish him a very happy second anniversary at dA.

According to Andrey, photography is just a hobby and he does not consider himself to be a photographer at all. He says he just likes to do photomanipulations with Photoshop CS3 and since he is unable to draw, his favorite tool is the camera. Besides Photoshop, his tool kit contains several cameras; Nikon 8800, Canon PowerShot 640, Canon EOS 350, Canon EOS 40D and lenses; Canon EF 50mm, 70-300mm, 17-85mm and Sigma EXDG Fisheye. He already offers a baker's dozen of his photomanipulations in his dA printshop [link] including some of my favorite images from his gallery (shown above left).

When asked to provide three of his own favorites from his gallery, he provided these with the explanation: In the first case he really liked the way the color turned out in this one; in the second, it is just an interesting photo of a press photographer; and, in the third, it is somethig that struck him as a cynical сoncept. He also says that his choice of images is random, and chosen only because they suit his mood at any given time. It sounds like this randomness drives his choices whenever he creates... and why not? We are always at our best when allowed to created freely.

When asked to provide some examples of other artists at dA that he finds inspirational he chose `gilad `mehmeturgut and *sharadhaksar saying that they all have clearly professional talent and galleries. Though none are aware of his admiration for their images. Here are some examples:

:icongilad: :iconmehmeturgut: :iconsharadhaksar:

I asked him about influences and inspirations outside of deviant art and he gave some very interesting names with links to follow (I could spend days on these) Leo Tolstoy [link] Mark Knopfler [link] Salvador Dali [link] Jesus Christ [link] Andrei Sakharov [link] Elizabeth II [link]

Outside of deviantART Andrey is married with one daughter :icontiefel:, lives in Moscow and is the chief of advertising in a department store. He says he loves to learn and learn and learn and live & grow, but also admits to having a lot of bad habits that he is in no hurry to get rid of.

In the future, Andrey looks forward to fulfilling orders by commission and special requests and would like to invite any ideas. e-mail him at ObrAS@inbox.ru

Here are a few more images selected from his gallery:

In other news: I have been enjoying a visit from my sister in law who traveled all the way from Africa to see me and I have recently passed the 300 mark for watchers. Actually is was April 28th, when *hotwiar added me. Thanks to *hotwiar and all of my other recent new watchers. I plan to try to update my LMS journal soon ad promise to let you all know when that happens.

Have a great week, everyone.

A poem by *Blueskye27

From Seattle to Superstition,
she takes our breath
away
with sunsets and seascapes,
shimmering deserts.
She smiles through pain,
encouraging us with
her words,
her courage,
her singular spirit,
to feel
to fight on
to fly.

This dragon predates my becoming a member of dA. It was made by my daughter, Dawn, when I first learned about my LMS in April of 2006. It was subsequently turned into a logo for my LMS webpage [link] and my support/friend stamp.

"Slay The Dragon"
Please use this stamp in your own journal or shoutboard and/or add it to your favorites to help keep awareness alive for this very rare cancer.

Now there is a stamp that can be used in messages and non-subscriber journals too. Highlight and copy these two (attached) icons and paste them anywhere in dA.
