Artist's Comments

Revised 5/17/2008

It is suggested that those who are using the old version and companion action download the new set. The new revisions make more sense and are more complete. A jpg version will also be uploaded today so that it can be submitted to *photoshop-tutorials:iconphotoshop-tutorials:

Use the download to get the tutorial. It is in html archive format. A zip file with the Photoshop action that accompanies the tutorial can be downloaded here: [link]

I originally created this tutorial in part to help me remember how to do this and in part because I really like using Photoshop 7. Even though there are newer versions of Photoshop and Photomatix to create HDR images, it IS possible to make some nice HDR images using only Photoshop 7. Are there others out there who, for whatever reasons, still use PS7 and would like to do HDRi? If so, please share your experiences by commenting here. I'd really like to know how this works for others.

I have tested this technique to a point where I am satisfied that it will produce images as good or better than the images I could produce with Photomatix. Here are some examples:

Baby You Can Drive My Car [link] (the tutorial example) and the version made with Photomatix [link]
180 Degrees of Seattle [link] which is also shown in a before and after format here: [link]
The Bell Tower [link] and with Photomatix here: [link]
Museo de la Esmeralda [link] and with Photomatix here: [link]

Now for a little request from you.

After spending a large amount of time putting together this tutorial and the accompanying Photoshop7 actions I realize that it is possible that someone out there might appreciate it enough to want to offer something tangible in return. So in the spirit of tangible recognition I offer up my wish list.

Purchase a gift for yourself or your loved ones here:
Shop For A Cure to support finding a cure for Leiomyosarcoma

Make a donation to Leiomyosarcoma direct reaearch foundation on my behalf here [link]

Donate subscriptions so that I might keep this dA account going past its next expiration.

A few people here might know of my mission to find ways to help find a cure for Leiomyosarcoma, but it might bear repeating that all of the proceeds I receive from every print I sell go into a special fund that is periodically emptied to make a donation to a worthy organization that is engaged in Sarcoma research.
:rose::rose::rose:

Here are a few facts about Leiomyosarcoma

Leiomyosarcoma is a malignant smooth muscle tumor that most often occurs deep inside the organs of the body where detection and diagnosis is very difficult. It is also known to be very aggressive; meaning that by the time it is found it is not uncommon to find that it has already spread to distant sites.

As a part of the larger group of Sarcomas it accounts for less than 1% of all cancers, but Leiomyosarcoma itself affects just four of every one million people who get cancer. Between 9000 and 12000 people will find they have a Sarcoma in any given year. It is an equal opportunity cancer affecting men and women in approximately equal numbers and broadly cast amongst the populations of every nation and ethnic group. About 15% of all childhood cancers are Sarcomas. Because of its rarity relatively little is known about how to successfully treat Sarcoma. Conducting studies is also increasingly difficult due to the recent (February 2007) severe cuts in government funding that have forced the suspension of many Sarcoma research projects. With that in mind private funding is becoming an attractive alternative. Well, just about the only alternative.

Since there are not that many of us, we must each work vigilantly to keep the search for a cure alive.

So, here I am asking that the people who find some usefulness in this tutorial or those who enjoy my work also help support my efforts to make a dent in the void. There are a lot of little things we can do that can add up to something significant. I ask that you would do whatever you can to help.

My own situation with Leiomyosarcoma is this. I am one of the few lucky people with LMS to achieve remission for more than a very short time. I have been in remission for more than one year now. Though the chances of my continuing remission are still relatively low, the longer the remission lasts, the longer it is likely to continue. If I remain in remission for another four years my chances of long-term survival will increase to about 50%. One year ago my chances of long-term survival were 20%.

I am not writing this because I want people to feel sorry for me. My life is richly blessed. I am writing this to promote Sarcoma awareness and because I would like to help find a cure. If you enjoy what I do, my hope is that you will help my effort toward finding a cure by supporting my work. See my wish list above. If you would like to find out more about Leiomyosarcoma, please visit my Sarcoma resource page at [link] You can also learn about my “Smiles” fund to support sarcoma research there or read my accounting of my journey with cancer.

It's Photoshop7 which is very old obsolete software that I still like better than anything that has come since. I would think it would be something you could pick up used somewhere for a reasonable price. No? :tears:

Then you have everything you need, don't you?

That is one of the reasons I wrote this tutorial, to find ways to not need to go out and buy new software. It is nice to figure how how to use some of the more advanced features of the software we already have. Especially when they were so pricey to begin with!

I thank you for the compliment for a tutorial that you cannot benefit from. You are very kind. Maybe you can pass the info along to someone you know who might benefit from it. :)
